A few nights ago, I found a brilliantly simple tutorial on how to replicate that gorgeous black hole from Interstellar.
The artist/author Sir Shivering Cactus managed to recreate the event horizon aura compression and accretion disc very cleverly with some out of the box tools in Cinema 4d.
I decided to give it a crack and render it in octane instead, because well why not? I am paying for it. The only adjustment I had to make over the original tutorial was to go with a mirror reflection instead of transparency with refraction. This was due to not being able to get the desired results with Octane's specular material. I'll probably have another crack at getting it later.
Overall super happy with the results and even threw in a ship design I've been working on for good measure. The animation took around 5 hours to render due to me insisting on having anaglyphic stereo output as part of the thinlens effects.
Next steps: Probably explore how I can add the cloudy/gaseous effects found in nature with some cloner/volume trickery.
